New Read and Publish Agreements for 2022

The University has signed Read and Publish Agreements with a number of journal publishers for 2022.

What does this mean?

The University pays the publisher a single annual fee to cover subscription fees and Article Processing Charges (APCs). Each agreement is slightly different so check the details for each publisher in the links below.

Otago researchers are now able to publish Open Access articles at no cost to the researcher, through new Read and Publish agreements with the listed publishers. Check the details as some agreements have limits on the number of articles included in the agreement.

Listed publishers

How to access this opportunity

Researcher’s don’t need to change current publishing practices. Submit as usual and you will be notified on acceptance if you are eligible to publish your article Open Access with no transactional APCs.

See Otago’s Read and Publish guide for specific details on the submission process for each publisher.

Read and Publish guide

The following publishers are involved in 2022:

  • Springer Nature (but not for Nature-branded journals)
  • Cambridge University Press
  • Wiley
  • Oxford University Press

Benefits for researchers

Articles published as Open Access have increased visibility, and receive a larger readership and a higher number of citations than those articles which are not Open Access. Contact your Subject Librarian to find out more about how you can benefit from these agreements.

How did this happen?

Otago is an associate member of the CAUL (Council of Australian University Libraries) Procurement consortium. Pressure from academic library consortia, such as CAUL, for Open Access publishing has led to increasing experimentation by publishers, and new Open Access business models. These “transformative agreements” are designed to eventually re-purpose subscription expenditure to pay for APC fees associated with Open Access publishing.
